Eco road-tripping
There's nothing better than hitting the open road at this time of year. But driving cross-country with your big gas-guzzling SUV is not all that eco-friendly. The good news is there are ways to be greener while traveling, says John McGanty, general manager of travel for Internet Brands, an Internet media company. Here, his best tips:
Go direct. Use Google Maps or MapQuest to figure out the most direct routes. And try to travel at off-peak times, when there's less stop-and-go traffic (which reduces your miles per gallon).
Embrace "slow travel." It's about going to one place for a long visit, rather than several spots for short visits. This cuts down on gas usage and makes for a more relaxing vacation. Find more tips at Slow Travel (slowtrav.com).
Pack eco-friendly car snacks. Buying snacks from the bulk food bin (and transporting them in reusable containers) is a great way to reduce packaging. It also keeps you away from the fast-food joints, which is good for your body and the planet.
